How to Troubleshoot Your Oven Simple

Posted by admin on February 5, 2010

You have powdered and chopped. You have whipped and stirred. You have candied and stirred. Now it is time to lovingly cook your fabrication on your typical electric stove. You turn the knob the range and nothing comes on. Understanding some simple repairs for an electric oven that you can do by hand could potentially save you a lot of time and money.

Check Electricity for Your Oven

An electric oven will not do the job without power. The conspicuous question that one thinks about is whether your electric stove-top is really plugged in to service. If verified, check your circuit breaker (or fuse) is not tripped. Perhaps you tripped a breaker. If everything is well so far, verify the current of the plug using a digital multi-meter. If you don’t have one close by, plugging a portable radio into the outlet can at least see if the power is flowing.

Heating Elements

Check that your stove is not plugged in. Take a peek at the heating element of the one that is broken. If you can see that the heating element is obviously damaged, get a new one and swap it. If the heating element looks OK, put it into a working burner and turn the stove back on. If the element won’t heat, buy a new one and change it with the new one.

While you are looking about in your stove-top, over again with the electricity off, inspect the power terminals. If you find corrosion, remove it via fine sandpaper. Do not use steel wool, as small remnants can get wedged in the terminals and cause an electrical short when you turn the electricity on.

If the heating coil ran in the active burner, you have a unique problem. Be sure to unplug the oven again. Record the heating coil burner receptacles wires to their active position terminals. Test the wires from a multimeter set to RX1. If the holder fails the test, you have to remove the receptacle and fix a replacement receptacle in.

Extension Cords

Avoid using extension cords with your stove completely.

Most Importantly Be Careful

Electricity can be quite dangerous, particularly for someone who does not have much previous experience engaged in electrical repairs. If you have any doubts at all about troubleshooting your oven without assistance, ask somebody who has more training to come over and walk you with the process.

If you exhaust all theses possibilities, time to call in a technician.
